Making Room for God: The Power of a Personal Prayer Space

“Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.” – 2 Kings 4:10 KJV

In the early morning hours, with a cup of coffee in hand, I go to my sacred place. Jesus is always already waiting for me there, and together, we commune and talk over many things.

It is in this sacred place that the Lord often does His deepest work in me. I’m not exactly sure why that is, except to say that maybe it’s because He knows that by my creating a dedicated place to meet with Him, I am—like the Shunammite woman—intentionally making space in my natural world for fellowship with Him in the supernatural realm.

Yes, God Can and Will Meet You Anywhere

Before I go any further, let me be clear: you don’t need a prayer room or a designated prayer chair to connect with God. He is omnipresent, and scripture is full of examples of Him showing up in unexpected places to meet people in their time of need.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Jonah met God in the belly of a great fish. (Jonah 2:1)

  • Joseph encountered God’s purpose while in a pit. (Genesis 37:24-28)

  • Hagar experienced divine intervention in the wilderness. (Genesis 16:7-13)

God will meet you wherever you are—but having a consistent, sacred space helps us remain faithful in seeking Him.

The Benefits of a Dedicated Prayer Space

If you are fortunate enough to have room for a prayer room, a prayer closet, or even a specific chair where you regularly meet with God, it can become a powerful part of your spiritual life. Here’s why:

  •   It demonstrates priority. Setting aside a physical place for prayer is a statement—to God and to yourself—that your relationship with Him is your highest priority. Just as the Shunammite woman made room for the prophet Elisha, you are making room for the presence of God in your home (2 Kings 4:10).

  • It builds spiritual consistency. Rituals, when done with sincerity, strengthen our faith. I can be having a difficult day—feeling weary, discouraged, or overwhelmed—but the moment I step into my sacred place, peace washes over me. Why? Because that place holds a history of victories, tears, and encounters with God. Just like walking into your church sanctuary brings a sense of reverence, stepping into your personal prayer space reminds you that this is where you and God meet.

  • It creates an atmosphere of expectation. When we consistently meet God in a designated space, it cultivates faith and anticipation. Just as Moses met with God in the Tent of Meeting (Exodus 33:7-9), we can create a space where we expect to hear from Him, receive guidance, and feel His presence.

What Sacred Spaces Can Look Like

Sacred spaces don’t have to be extravagant. They can be as simple as:

·      A quiet corner of a room with a chair, Bible, and journal.

·      A small closet where you can shut out distractions and pray.

·      A spot on your porch where you meet God in the morning.

·      A specific kneeling place by your bed.

Not long ago, I was talking with my friend, Sister Andrea Knight, and she shared about her sacred space. In fact, our conversation is what inspired this post! Sister Andrea comes from a tremendous Apostolic heritage, and her grandmother—who was a mighty woman of prayer—also had a sacred place of her own. That space became a legacy, a place where prayers were prayed, battles were fought, and victories were won.

Sister Andrea’s prayer room is lined with wood from Sister Bertha Bowen’s house. Sister Bowen was the one who won Sister Andrea’s great-grandmother, Sister Mary Margaret Baughn, to the Lord. Many powerful prayers went up from Sister Bowen’s home, including one particularly unforgettable moment.

One day, Sister Bowen and Sister Andrea’s grandmother stood on the porch and saw a tornado barreling toward them across the field. They began to pray, and as they watched, the tornado shifted course and went around them!

According to Sister Andrea, Sister Bowen and her husband traveled and preached from front porches. They usually walked from place to place, often spending the night in the woods while on their journeys.

I know that God doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands (Acts 7:48), but after hearing just a few of these powerful testimonies, I can’t help but want to visit Sister Andrea’s prayer room myself—just to soak up any lingering power from God that might still be dripping from that wood! LOL.

Here is a short video of Sis Knight’s Prayer Room:

A few other sacred spaces, including my own. The first one with the picture of Jesus hugging a woman is my prayer place.

Making Room for God in Your Home

If you don’t already have a designated place for prayer, I encourage you to create one. It doesn’t have to be fancy or large—it just needs to be yours. A place where you and Jesus meet.

Ask yourself: Where in my home can I create a space to meet with God?

Whether it’s a whole room or just a chair in the corner, God will honor the space you set apart for Him. He is waiting to meet with you there.

I would love to hear from you! Do you have a prayer room or a sacred space?

Share in the comments or post a picture—I’d love to see where you meet with God!

Meeting God feels like an overwhelming embrace of unconditional love and peace, where every worry dissolves, and a profound sense of unity, clarity, and joy envelops you. It's a transformative encounter filled with awe and a deep understanding of one's purpose, leaving you feeling connected to the universe in a blissful and enlightening way.

A place where you feel comfortable embracing his powerful love and receiving direction for your life, I have found great joy and success, praying and listening to God, great and profound wisdom.

🙌🏻 So good! There is something about an intentionally set aside place where you meet with God daily. I can almost feel God’s excitement and anticipation as He awaits my meeting Him - like the excitement of a partner as they await the love of their life to disembark from a loaded plane (or train, or ship…). How thrilled God is when we find our way to “walk with Him in the cool of the day”.

I love the idea of a small specific prayer closet - at the moment, I have a chair and a prayer board in my bedroom. 🙌🏻 my other favorite place is kneeling in my living room at the couch. ♡
