What’s On My Shelf: PSALMS Devotions With David

Updated: Mar 3

This is What I’m Reading and Why I Think You Need to Read it Too!

📚 Book Title: PSALMS Devotions with David

📖 Author: Reverend David McCool

Why I Love It: Devotions with David is unlike any devotional I’ve ever read. In just over 350 pages, Reverend McCool masterfully leads readers on a power-packed, pocket-sized journey through all 150 Psalms. What makes this book stand out—and why it’s now on my gift-giving list—is McCool’s ability to bridge two worlds. On one hand, he makes readers feel as if they’re sitting at the table with some of Pentecost’s greatest spiritual minds, engaging in deep, thought-provoking discussions. On the other, he presents these scriptural insights in a way that even a new believer can easily grasp and grow from.

Each daily reading feels as much like a pastoral commentary as it does a devotional, and I love, love, love it for that reason! Devotions with David makes me think—it stretches my usual way of looking at these sacred passages. The space provided for personal notes is another big win for me, and McCool’s personal takeaways are both heartfelt and refreshing, offering a glimpse into his own walk with God in a way that inspires and encourages.

✨ Favorite Quote:"Barnes Notes Commentary makes the observation that this Psalm (71) was written as the author was nearing old age. The beginning of it is a prayer to never let him be confused. This is a prayer that I pray as I get older. I want God to help me keep my right mind. The author says in verse 3, “Be Thou my strong habitation wherein I may continually resort.” This seems to be a prayer that says, “Lord don’t abandon me as I get older.”

🎯 Who Should Read It?This book is a must-read for any pastor or serious student of the Word—especially for those who feel like they’ve read every devotional out there. But as mentioned above, it’s just as valuable for someone who is new to their faith.

In fact, I’m considering recommending Devotions with David to the newer believers I’m mentoring as they read through the Psalms.

They may not be ready to tackle the entire Bible yet, but completing the Psalms would be a meaningful achievement. And I can’t think of a better devotional to guide them on that journey!

If you’re looking for a resource that both challenges seasoned readers and nurtures new believers, this is the book to get.

Personal Note

I had the privilege of meeting Reverend David McCool and his wife, Kris, at the Mississippi District Children’s Conference this year. He was not only one of the evening speakers but also a clinician at the conference. Though our conversation lasted only a few minutes, the beauty of their spirits left a lasting impression on me. There was something so genuine and deeply rooted in their walk with God that I felt drawn to purchase Devotions with David.

When I returned home and began reading it, I quickly realized that the same depth I had sensed in their spirit was woven throughout the pages of this book. I don’t really “know” them, and they don’t know me—but I believe God orchestrated that brief connection so I could share this incredible devotional with you. If you’re looking for a book that will enrich your journey through the Psalms, I truly believe Devotions with David will be a blessing to you.

Book Description [From Back of Book]

Devotions with David was birthed out of a need to connect with our church during the 2020

pandemic. The book you’re holding in your hand is a collection of devotions written by Pastor

David McCool that he shared with his church. There is at least one devotion from each psalm.

The hope is that you will glean something fresh from his practical thoughts. If you are a

preacher, maybe this will spark a thought for you to develop. If you are looking for a short 5 to

7 minute devotion, this may be what you’re looking for. There is always a call to dig deeper

beyond the devotion. Let’s be challenged together as we explore Devotions With David through

the book of Psalms.

David’s Bio

David McCool has been involved in ministry his entire life. Born into a preachers home, ministry

has been a part of his life since birth. In 2003 David, his wife, Kris and their three children

started Life church of Roseville and in 2006 accepted the pastorate of their home church,

Apostolic Faith Tabernacle in Ferndale, MI. While pastoring two growing churches, David has

been involved in Children’s Ministry for almost 20 years and has also worked in education for

more than 15 years. He published his first book, in December 2024. In addition to ministry, he

enjoys his role as Poppi to four amazing grandchildren.

David McCool, along with his wife Kris, has dedicated nearly 20 years to Children’s Ministry. He began his journey as a sectional director and was later elected district secretary, serving in that role for eight years. Following this, he was elected Children’s Ministry director for the Michigan district, serving for seven years and is currently the district director for the Detroit Metro District. David's passion for nurturing the spiritual growth of children is evident in his work. In addition to his ministry, he serves as an Achievement Behavior Support Specialist, working with kindergarten through second-grade students. Outside of his professional commitments, David finds his greatest joy in his three adult children, their spouses, and his role as "Poppi" to four wonderful grandchildren.

💃🏻 I love your recap! How beautiful it is to not only read the scripture and pray it over our own lives, but to claim God’s promises for others… ♡

I’ve prayed God sustain my sanity - as well as my loved ones… I can’t help but wonder if David had the madness of Saul in his mind as he penned some of the words in Psalms 71. To have witnessed Saul’s torment and mental anguish after rejecting God and walking in disobedience, it surely left a lasting impact on his life.

Thank you for your words, and encouragement to read this book! My Dear Husband is in the process of this one and now I anticipate it even more!…
